Support Our Troops
I had the incredible honor standing on Taft and Eisenhower on Saturday afternoon, waving my American flag and holding a sign reading ’Give Our Troops a Honk’. The number of horns honking as vehicles passed through the intersection said it overwhelmingly loud and clear, Loveland Supports Our Troops. A Reporter Herald article on November 4, 2002 about a group of people protesting our stance on IRAQ only told half of the story. It gave the impression that a simple group of Loveland residents decided to have a grassroots protest. I am a veteran of the Ft. Collins protest also, and investigated the background of the anti-war protestors. The New York organization, War Resisters League and War Resisters' International organize these protests. These groups will never endorse any kind of war, even if it is a "humanitarian military intervention", hardly a grassroots effort. Both sides have valid points. Any veteran, having experienced war, will tell you it is indeed hell. However, once we make the decision and place our sons and daughters in harm’s way we have an obligation to support them. If all they see is radical anti-war protests, they can become demoralized. Our troops need the support of those they are fighting to protect. The unnamed group of counter protesters in Ft. Collins, that has a sign saying ‘Support Our Troops’ and ‘Thank a Vet’ is VFW Post 1781 of Ft. Collins. They proudly display their banners and their post’s flag every weekend. All VFW posts should be so proud. I and other members of FreeRepublic.com have joined them. Free Republic has a campaign called ‘Operation Infinite Freep’ to counter the well organized anti-war campaign, designed to convince Americans that 9-11 was all our fault and we have no right to fight back. We document our support for our troops and pass it along to them every week. I cherish the Constitution, the Bill of Rights and the Declaration of Independence and am extremely grateful to all of the hundreds of thousands of men and women who have died to preserve our Republic form of government. Therefore, my intention is not to silence the anti-war protesters, as it is their right. I just want to point out who is behind these protests and show there is support for our troops as they fight the War on Terrorism. As long as there are those groups whose intention is to demoralize our Armed Forces while in harm’s way, I for one will be standing on the corner on Saturday afternoons in support of our troops, alone if need be, to show them that not all Americans are willing to be overrun by terrorists. You are more than welcome to join me.
Sincerely,
