You've Got Potential

We have become a society where by if we have the potential to commit a crime we must be scrutinized by law enforcement even though no crime has been committed. You only need to have the potential to commit a crime. Yes, if you own a firearm you have the potential to be the next perpetrator of a shooting spree. You could shoot up a school or a day care center or a stock brokerage.

Passing laws based on the potential to commit a crime is absurd. Here are some more inanimate objects that you could possess that allow you the potential to become a criminal. If you have matches or a lighter, a magnifying glass, some flint and steel or even two sticks to rub together you have the potential to start a fire and could be labeled as a potential arsonist. We had better pass a law to regulate who should be allowed to be in possession of such evil things.

If you have under you kitchen sink, or in your laundry room ammonia and bleach, you could potentially create poisonous gas. If you have a tank full of fuel in your automobile you have the potential to use that as a fire accelerant. Why if you have smaller containers and some old rags around the house you even have the ability to make moltov cocktails. We had better keep an eye and you and have to register every time you fill up that tank. Better yet, if you operate an automobile you have the potential to kill.

If you own anything that could be used in an assault against another individual you have got potential. Better get rid of those hammers, screw drivers, baseball bats, kitchen knives, and any rocks in your yard.

If you possess a vocabulary of non politically correct words you even have the potential to cause verbal abuse. Perhaps we should register anyone that has the ability to offend anyone else with language.

The problem with gun control laws is that they are about controlling people, not guns. Gun control laws do nothing to prevent crime. They are designed only to control the people by making them criminals for mere possession of inanimate objects. This is done under the guise of somehow making us safer. Law abiding subjects must jump through hoops to prove they are worthy to own a firearm, for self defense or any other reason.

Welcome to the world of potential, where potentially anything is possible. We have more than enough laws that address criminal acts. It is time to put an end to creating laws based on the potential to commit a crime, lest we all become criminals.

I could go on with this absurd argument, but I have only allowed myself an hour to complete this potentially ridiculous writing. I am quite sure that you can add to the list.
