Prairie dog fishing does not require a lot of equipment. Some good six pound monofilment line is really all that is needed.
We also recommend the following equipment to make your fishing more enjoyable.
- A good strong bait casting reel and a good stiff pole.
- A good comfortable lawn chair.
- A small Lousiville slugger that you can weild with one hand. An alternative is a Poly-Carbonate PR-24 Police Baton. When a prairie dog or any other wild animal gets near its captor, it can get mighty mean. You will not reel in too many of these creatures before you realize the necessity of a good doggie whacker.
- A net to safely handle the rodents
- A small pocketknife for field dressing and skinning your prize
- Cooler filled with ice to keep your catch fresh and your beer cold.
- A portable canopy to provide some shade because prairie dogs are found on the shadeless prairies.
- A good pair of binoculars to see what is happening.
There is an outfit in Lilburn, Georgia called U-SPRAY, INC. which has some incredible products to help catch Prairie Dogs and just about any other pest known to man.
Here are just two of their products that will help you catch prairie dogs all day long.
Trappers Choice Prairie Dog Lure
Trappers Choice Prairie Dog Lure is great. It's a blend of several grasses and plants which smell strong and will get the attention of any foraging dog. Spread a tablespoon or two near the hole where you want the doggies to appear.
Prairie Dog Snares. Snaring is a method of trapping prairie dogs which is
generally done by trained trappers. A snare is a cable which is 3-5 feet long.
On one end it has a connector which is tied to your fishing line. On the other
end it is looped back around to form a circle. It has a small mechanism which enables the cable to move in one direction but not the other. Once set in place, dogs which exit will stick their head through the cable circle which will then come to rest on their neck and shoulders. As the animal moves out of their home they will be tightening the snare around their neck with the cable which won't loosen.
